- newJustin Smith Q&A: ‘When it’s time to get my ass out of here, I’m going’
Two days after the 49ers’ loss in the 2012 NFC Championship Game, general manager Trent Baalke was surprised to stumble onto defensive tackle Justin Smith lifting weights at the team facility. Today, six days after the 49ers’ final minicamp of the offseason, Smith, 33, spoke with the media after signing a two-year contract extension that could keep him with the team through the 2015 season. It’s the start of vacation time for coaches and players before training camp, but Smith didn’t speak via conference call from a resort.

- newReport: 49ers sign OC Greg Roman to two-year extension
Niners offensive coordinator Greg Roman desperately wants to be a head coach. If he doesn’t get his wish after the 2013 season, though, he’ll presumably receive a nice paycheck to help ease the sting.

- newJustin Smith signs two-year extension with the 49ers
Twelve-year veteran Justin Smith was lamenting last week how football “doesn’t like old guys.” The 49ers like Smith just fine as evidenced by signing the defensive lineman to a two-year extension. Smith, 34, was in the final year of a six-year, $45 million deal. Smith proved his worth last season when the 49ers’ defense fell into two categories – Before Triceps and After Triceps. The team allowed an average of 12.7 points a game before Smith partially tore his triceps on Dec. 16 in New England. That average, which doesn’t include special teams or defensive scores, jumped to 28 poin…

- 49ers release Milpitas high star Brandon Carswell
It just got worse for Milpitas High legend Brandon Carswell. The 49ers released the wide receiver Tuesday after Carswell tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, moments after signing a two-year deal with the team. Carswell signed to occupy tight end Cameron Morrah’s spot on the roster. The former Cal tight end played a few seasons in Seattle before signing briefly with the 49ers. Carswell, meanwhile, was doing a pursuit drill during a 49ers’ mandatory minicamp practice last week when he crumbled to the turf . He spent nearly the entirety of the 2012 season on the Raiders’ practi…

- Yahoo named founding partner of new 49ers stadium
The new 49ers stadium is taking on a very Bay Area feel — at least in terms of corporate sponsorship. The 49ers announced today that Yahoo will be the “exclusive online sports content, social networking, and photo and video sharing partner” for the team and for Levi’s Stadium, named for San Francisco-based corporate sponsor Levi Strauss & Co. The Yahoo deal begins in 2014 with the opening of the new stadium and extends through the 2023 season. Yahoo’s fantasy football empire is the most obvious and natural tie-in for the 49ers. Yahoo will have its name on a brand new “Fantasy Fo…

- Seahawks CB Brandon Browner: I’d put my hands around Jim Harbaugh’s neck
Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner wasn’t pleased with the recent comments about PEDs from 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. “He’s a coach. He’s never gonna be out there lined up against me,” Browner said Thursday on Sports Radio KJR. “I wish he would; I’d put my hands around his neck.” Let’s back up. On Tuesday, Harbaugh said he “definitely noticed” the recent problems Seattle’s had with performance-enhancing drugs. “It has no place in an athlete’s body,” Harbaugh said of PEDs. “We play by the rules. You want to be above reproach, especially when you’re good, becaus…

- Final notes from the final 49ers’ minicamp practice
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ended the 49ers’ off-season program for veterans with a flourish, completing four passes of 15 yards or more. It ended the last day of mandatory minicamp for the team. Rookies still have one more week before they are dismissed until the start of training camp at the end of July. “Colin has been on it all off-season,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “That period especially was outstanding.” Highlights of practice included an nice catch by rookie tight end Vance McDonald on a ball thrown behind him. He also caught a few seam routes. “We have to have more V…

- Cortland Finnegan responds unkindly to Craig Dahl’s comments
With social media, no good, innocent comment goes unpunished. New 49ers’ safety Craig Dahl revealed Tuesday that the Rams cracked the code on the 49ers’ offense last year. Through formation and personnel, the Rams could discern whether the 49ers were going to run or pass. “We had a few tips off of film, we were able to differentiate between run and pass early,” Dahl said. “That kind of gave us an added benefit on defense.” That’s just what players do when they change teams. They divulge the secrets of their former team, partially for their own benefit. And there might be a little…
